Overview: The school merged in July 2016 by School of Public Health which founded in June 2001, and HOPE School of Nursing which founded in 2002. The School is the most important bases in China to foster senior specialized personnel in public health and preventive medicine, in global health as well as in nursing. The School is consisted of three departments and four centers: Preventive Medicine Department, Global Health Department and Nursing Department, Public Health and Preventive Medicine Experimental Teaching Center, Global Health Institute of Wuhan University (Subordinate to School of Public Health), Nursing Simulation and Research Center, Nursing Comprehensive Simulated Rehabilitation Center etc. Currently, the School has one English academic journal "Global Health Research and Policy".  The fulltime students of the School are 694 including 493 Bachelor, 178 Master and 23 PhD students. At present, there are total 85 faculty including 13 professors, 19 associate professors (deputy chief nurse), 21 lecturers (including 5 post-doctor teachers in employment period), 3 post-doctors, 5 senior experimentalists and 5 experimentalists working in the school. Among the teachers, nighty percent hold doctorate degree and eighty-eight percent have studied and worked overseas. Among the faculty, there are one "Top-Notch Young Talents Program of China", one "Chutian scholar", one "Luojia Distinguished Professor", two "Luojia young scholar" and one "Wuhan University Outstanding Teacher". Besides that, the School has also employed four "Luojia guest professors", one adjunct professor, one guest professor and seventy off-campus master or doctoral supervisors, all of whom are originally well-known experts in the society.

 

Discipline Construction: As the goal of constructing the “State-of-the-art with international influence” specialty, the School of Health Sciences has the right to confer doctorate degree in 3 second-level disciplines (occupational and environmental health, social medicine and health service management and statistics). At the same time, it has the right to confer master’s degree in 2 first-level disciplines - public health and preventive medicine, nursing, which includes 8 second-Level disciplines (occupational and environmental health, health toxicology, nutrition and food hygiene, epidemiology and health statistics, social medicine and health service management, children and maternal health, global health, nursing). In 2009 and 2010, the School attained the right to confer professional degree of MPH (Master of Public Health) and MSN (Master of Sciences in Nursing). In 2014, it was approved to set up a first-level discipline of postdoctoral research station in public health and preventive medicine. Occupational and environmental health and social medicine and health service management are respectively honored key discipline and characteristic discipline of Hubei province; Epidemiology is listed into the key laboratory of virology of the Ministry of Education. The school is responsible for one "211 project" third phase discipline construction project (social medicine), two "985 project" second phase extending platform construction projects (water environment and water security, virus causing serious human disease) and one "985 project" third phase construction project, namely "The Project of Creating World First-class Subject Group of Public Management”.

 

Talent Cultivation: As the goal to cultivate "the state needs and international standard sophisticated high-tech talent and leading peer in the specialty", the School builds up the talent cultivation mode of "internationalization-compound-innovation" and formed three major characteristics through continuing reform and exploration of undergraduate teaching and postgraduate education. Firstly, the innovative practice model of entire double-supervisor cultivating–each undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral candidates are jointly tutored by an on-campus (on-school) supervisor and an off-campus (including foreign) supervisor. Secondly, internationalized education–the School have implemented internationally cooperative education program and have signed cooperation agreements with many universities abroad, including Harvard University, Duke University, The University of Hawaii, The University of Tennessee, Case Western Reserve University, North Carolina University in USA, University of Dundee in British, Vaasan Ammattikorkeakoulu University of Applied Sciences in Finland, Tokyo Metropolitan University in Japan, University of Malaya of Malaysia, Mahidol University of Thailand, University of Zambia and several other foreign universities. Student exchange program and joint training program of postgraduate have also been implemented. Thirdly, the implementation of inter-disciplinary public health talent cultivation project – making full use of the advantage of Wuhan University as a comprehensive university, the school increase the share of general and optional courses and require the students to improve their knowledge structure by relatively systematically studying the knowledge of the following fields: the humanities, social science, mathematics and natural science, Chinese civilization and foreign culture and interdisciplinary fields, expecting the students to meet the need of public health practice in a better way. In 2010, 2011 and 2013, undergraduate education of the school was evaluated and honored the first prize in the university. In 2012, ‘The Construction and Applied Research on four year BSN simultaneously Teaching Model’ received the super outstanding teaching outcome of Wuhan University, as well as the Hubei Provincial first class of outstanding teaching outcomes in 2013. This marked our entrance into the best schools in Wuhan University upon the quality education of undergraduates.

 

Scientific Research: In recent years, we have won 10 Provincial and Ministerial Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, have published over 180 papers which were included in SCI/SSCI, and edited twelve textbooks and books. At present, the School is responsible for a large number of projects, including 15 projects funded by natural science foundation of China, 4 projects funded by Ministry of Education, and over 20 projects that funded by NIH, CMB, USAID etc. A fundamental transformation of the structure of research projects has been accomplished: in the past the projects are mainly small-sized lateral ones, but now many national and local key projects as well as international cooperation projects are undertook by the school. In the research field of occupational hazards and health, it formed the research direction of occupational hazards toxicity mechanism and population effect; in the field of infectious disease and epidemiology, it featured the research of molecular and immune as well as the research of crowd control; in the field of environmental toxicology, it formed a research direction based on toxicity mechanism of heavy metals and organic pollutants, migration and transformation and toxic effect, and related technologies of antipollution; in the field of bio statistical method, it formed several research directions, such as the statistical model of major diseases, medical diagnostic test evaluation and the development and application of statistical software; in the field of rural health security and health management at rural area, it formed a research direction featured birth control station management, management of grass-roots health institutions and old-age insurance; in the field of nursing, it formed five research areas including disaster nursing ,acute and emergency nursing, nursing management, community nursing, psychological and mental health nursing.
